After smashing ten past their visitors earlier in the season Club AZ certainly wouldn’t have lost any sleep when the draw was made and they found themselves facing Poynton once again. Poynton , on the other hand could have wished the draw had been kinder as they were comprehensively beaten by a well drilled AZ team who just cannot stop scoring . With Club AZ’s senior team the Cup holders ,also in the competition a clash between the two sides in a later round is certainly a mouth watering prospect.
Scorers for AZ – Craig Sharples 2, Rick Heapy, Neil Benny, Danny Vaughan and Chris Hicks .
In the Congleton derby it was Vale who came out victorious with a comfortable victory against their close neighbours and rivals from the Staffordshire league, Congleton Athletic. Vale raced into a two goals lead thanks to goals from Craig Caddy and Keele Mawby and always looked in control despite conceding a late penalty- confidently despatched by Dave Massey.
In Sale , Old Alts Vets turned the form book upside down by knocking out Wilmslow Albion at Crossford Bridge. Lanquishing at the foot of the East Cheshire League without a victory the Vets showed tremendous character to come from 2-1 down to snatch victory. Niall Griffin had surprised the visitors putting the Vets into the lead after only two minutes but two John Baron strikes, one from the penalty spot, had given the Albion a slender one goal advantage by half time. The Vets rallied in the second half and equalised with Griffin’s second goal of the game before Henry Finn wrapped up the tie with a low diving header from Ian Hunt’s inviting cross.
Playing on an adjacent pitch, Old Alts Youth put in a creditable display and were unlucky against Cheshire league outfit Poynton who crept into the second round thanks to goals from Paul McNeil and Andy Oaks. On this display they will have to improve dramatically in the next round if they are to progress any further. Old Olds however, can hold their heads up high.
