League Cup Final at Moss Rose- 1st May 2008
AC Bollan 0 Packhorse 2
79' Lee Malkin
90+2' Lee McIntyre
A bumper crowd at Moss Rose, the home of Macclesfield Town, saw the Packhorse retain the League Cup and keep themselves on course for what could become a remarkable treble.
They set their stall out from the first whistle giving AC little chance to settle and thought they’d taken the lead when Lee Malkin smashed home on three minutes only to have their celebrations cut short by referee’s assistant Pete Gregory who had raised his flag for offside.
The Pack continued to create plenty of chances, Lee McIntyre, Simon Band and Andy Atkinson, twice, all going close and Andy Quigley forcing a smart save from Bollan’s keeper Tom Edbrooke . With Martin Quigley continually breaking up play in midfield chances were rare for Bollan and it was twenty five minutes before they had their first chance, Fran Oliver’s effort smothered by Matt Towns. Despite further chances for McIntyre and Malkin it was Bollan who had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Fran Oliver was tripped on the edge of the area by Grant Beckwith and referee Colin Leese pointed to the spot. Oliver himself got up to take the penalty but his shot was well saved by Matt Towns diving to his left.
With Jordan Dyson having replaced Martin Quigley shortly before half time, the Packhorse continued to dominate in the second half. Bollan’s keeper Tom Edbrooke was in fine form and must have kept the Pack wondering if they were ever going to score Twice he denied Lee McIntyre, pushing his goal bound header onto the bar on 58 minutes . Simon Band’s shot with saved with his feet and there was a fantastic double save from Lee Malkin .
The deadlock was finally broken with eleven minutes remaining Lee Malkin latching onto a header from Terry Costello to lash the ball home. It seemed to finally break AC Bollan’s spirit and despite the efforts of Steve Orme and Andy Davies they never got back in the game. Deep into stoppage time Lee McIntyre got what his efforts deserved as he grabbed a second for the Packhorse to ensure the cup went back to the Broken Cross club once more
