A Review Of The Trade Mark Collections East Cheshire League

By Matt Eagles

Week Thirty two–. It was semi final time in the ECL this week, with the League Cup finalists decided in mid week and the Subsidiary Cup final line up settled on Saturday. The League Cup final will be between ECL’s two form sides, Boarhound and Puss In Boots. The Subsidiary Cup final will be between Puss In Boots and Mary Dendy who meet for the third time in eleven days and the fifth time this season.

In the weekend fixtures there was certainly no lack of goalmouth action as all three games saw nine goals!

League

Boarhound     8          Juno United    1

Boarhound just cannot stop scoring at the moment. Having put ten past Poynton last weekend and three against the Vets in midweek they followed up with another eight against a  hapless Juno United at Congleton Road. Once again it another uncompromising second half that saw the visitors defence leak goals and the home side romp to victory. The icing on the cake came with the final goal, a strike from player manager Maurice Sutton who was clearly delighted with his cameo appearance. Jamie Collins finished the league campaign with a hat-trick taking his tally to eighteen for the season in all competitions, Craig Hulme hit two , whilst Andy Foote and Sean Gill got one a piece. Boarhound moved up a place to fourth but with the final league game still to take place , they could be over hauled by  Club AZ who play Juno United at Sandringham Road.

Subsidiary Cup Semi-Final

Club AZ   3   Mary Dendy   6 (aet)

Mary Dendy battled their way to the final of the Subsidiary Cup in a scintillating match at Mulberry Sports Centre which saw five goals in extra time after the tie finished  level after ninety minutes at 2-2. Club AZ took the lead on fifteen minutes , Will Beighton nodding home at the far post but Dendy captain Andy Currie levelled to make it 1-1. AZ then thought they’d taken the lead as the ball appeared to have crossed the line  but it was hooked away by a  relieved Dendy defender and then to make matters worse  goalkeeper Stuart Davies denied them twice from the penalty spot, saving the initial spotkick and then the retake ordered by referee Paul Codling.

Despite these set backs Club AZ did eventually take the lead, Will Beighton securing his second of the game before half time.

Dendy were never out of the game though and with fifteen minutes remaining Matty Morris nodded home the equaliser after Mark Parker’s shot had crashed against the bar for his thirtieth goal of the season.

Extra time saw a change in fortune as the visitors took control , Andy Currie and Justin Thornton made it 2-4 and despite pulling a goal back from a Dave Lovett free kick Dendy scored another two to secure a deserved final berth. Matty Morris, with his second   and a spectacular strike from Mark Parker completing the scoring.

Subsidiary Cup Semi-Final

Puss In Boots   9            Poynton   0

Buoyant after their midweek success against Mary Dendy, Puss In Boots were in no mood to go easy on their inexperienced opponents at Bollington Recreation Ground. They dominated from the start creating chance after chance and finally broke the deadlock on twenty minutes, Lee Malkin sliding the ball underneath keeper Steve Hardacre with clinical precision. Geoff Shaw, after his spectacular midweek strike, scored again, crashing home the second after a neat  one two with Lee McIntyre on the edge of the penalty area. McIntyre himself hit number three with a sublime chip . Number four came via the penalty spot , Simon Ainsworth making no mistake.

With Steve Hardacre trying his best to encourage Poynton in the second half they were simply out muscled by the Puss. Substitute Emlyn Hughes  came on to make it 5-0 and full back Will Herbert hit number six with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area. Terry Costello, also on as a sub made it seven and set up number eight for Simon Gibbons to nod home  at the far post. Simon Ainsworth completed the scoring volleying home Wayne Riley’s cross from 4 yards with two minutes remaining.

It was a sad end for the Poynton lads who must pick themselves up for the start of next season and start believing in themselves. For the Puss In Boots, it’s another two games  and another two finals!
