Week Twenty Six – Puss In Boots clinch ECL Title
League
Puss In Boots 6 Poynton Kingfisher 0
Puss In Boots were crowned league champions for the second time in two seasons after a comfortable victory against a struggling Kingfisher side at the Recreation Ground. The home side were simply too strong for the visitors as they raced to a 4-0 half time lead. Wayne Riley poked home the first after four minutes as he was left unmarked two yards out and Emlyn Hughes rose to head home a second mid way through the half after good work from Lee McIntyre. McIntyre hit the third minutes later as he ran through unchallenged to round Kingfisher keeper Gary Fildes and barely a minute before half time McIntyre tapped in his second , Wayne Riley supplying the crucial ball.
After Emlyn Hughes headed home his second barely a minute into the second half, Puss in Boots took their foot off the gas and goalkeeper Andy Atkinson began to appear further and further upfield. Unfazed , Kingfisher stuck to the task in hand and took full advantage of Atkinson’s forays, Alex Heywood side footing into an unguarded net with seven minutes remaining. It was left to Puss In Boots leading scorer Lee McIntyre to deservedly confirm the home side as champions as he completed his hat-trick in the final minute.
League Cup Quarter Final
Poynton 1 Mary Dendy 6
Mary Dendy bounced back after their 7-0 thumping last week to inflict a heavy defeat on a luckless Poynton in this bruising encounter at Woodford Recreation Ground.
It just wasn’t Poynton’s day as , having started the game without their regular keeper who was stuck in traffic on his way to the game they gifted Dendy and early lead with an own goal. Things went from bad to worse as they conceded a second minutes later and were then reduced to ten players as the unfortunate Jonny Davies was forced to leave the field for medical treatment on his throat after a challenge with a Dendy player. The visitors then capitalised on their numerical advantage adding a third before half time.
With a change of personnel at the break Poynton had a better second half but despite a Chris Oake strike Dendy scored three more times to earn themselves a semi-final birth at home to Puss In Boots. Goalscorers for the visitors included Matty Morris and Mark Parker with two a piece and Will Tolley with his eleventh of the season.
Subsidiary Cup – Group A
Old Alts 0 Club AZ 4
Club AZ won this game with a competent first half display which saw them score three times and give their opponents a mountain to climb in the second half. Martin Firth scored twice with Lee Manion also on the scoresheet. The fourth goal came courtesy of an own goal.
