Week Twenty Three

League Cup 1st Round

Club AZ   1     Mary Dendy   2

Mary Dendy moved into the second round with a last gasp winner from Chris Copenhall at the Mulberry Sports Centre. The game started well for the home side when, after only five minutes , the ball looped off  Dendy defender Chris Shepherd and into the net following a freekick. With neither side gaining the initiative the game remained goal less until midway through the second half when Simon Lee pounced  to score his sixth goal of the season and tie the game and with extra time looming it was Copenhall who stole in to put the visitors through to the next round where they face Poynton.

Old Alts    1              Puss In Boots    6

Puss in Boots strolled to victory at Crossford Bridge as they bounced back from last weekends defeat. Man of the match Simon Ainsworth gave a taste of things to come as he jinked through Alts defence straight from the first whistle only to blaze over but it took half an hour before the visitors finally took the lead, Lee McIntyre neatly volleying home a long punt upfield by Matt Roberts. Simon Ainsworth made it two five minutes later powerfully heading home from a corner. With the Puss still celebrating Alts went straight up the other end  and scored one themselves, Lee Gilbert grabbing his second of the season.

The second half was one way traffic as the Puss attacked in waves. Simon Ainsworth headed home number three and Wayne Riley confidently despatched a fourth on his debut. Having hit the crossbar twice and seen several efforts go wide, Simon Gibbons then hit a deserved fifth and with minutes remaining , Lee Malkin ended the scoring and a miserable afternoon for Alts, with number six.

Juno     1      Old Alts Vets    2

Gary Fittes kept up his 100 %  record from the penalty spot as he slotted home his third in as many games to help defeat Juno at Sandringham Road. Jimmy Parrot had opened the scoring on 75 minutes with an unstoppable drive from 15 yards but Fittes’ penalty strike brought the visitors level. With five minutes remaining though the Vets finally broke the deadlock ,Neil Cooper claiming all three points with a debut goal.

Poynton  5      Poynton Kingfisher   2

A good win for Poynton  in their derby game with Kingfisher at Woodford Recreation ground. John Cairns opened the scoring for the home side only to see the visitors’ leading scorer , Luke Murray equalise. Two Scott Bajic goals , one from the penalty spot gave Poynton a two goal cushion at the break.

A second from Luke Murray  gave Kingfisher hope as he reduced the arrears to a single goal but  Poynton were determined to take the victory and  further strikes from John Cairns and a  Jonny Davies header made the final score 5-2 -  a win that sees the teams swop league positions once again.
