Saturday Cup Sponsored by Safety Screens Ltd Second Round- Sunday 15th February Poynton (CL) 8 Old Alts Vets 0 The Vets faced an uphill task right from the first whistle as they began this game without a recognised goalkeeper and sadly paid the price as they were swept aside by Poynton who scored four goals in each half at Deva Close. Boarhound 0 Club AZ (CL) 6 Wilmslow Sports 2 Congleton Vale 4 Perhaps the shock of the round occurred at Jim Evison Fields as Wilmslow Sports , flying high at the top of the ECL fell to Congleton Vale. Jonny Devine scored twice for Wilmslow but goals from Paul Spruce , Adam Cheetham , David Hammond and Tom Jackson sent the visitors home happy. Congleton Res 0 Club AZ (EC) 0 a.e.t. A fantastic result for AZ who were under the coche for most of the match but survived thanks to a terrific rearguard effort led by Rick Heapy. AZ had chances in the first half but the second belonged to the homeside who twice hit the woodwork. A horrific tackle on Greg Mathers saw Congleton reduced to ten men but despite having superior fitness it was AZ who went through 4-3 in a nailbiting penalty shootout.
Juno United 5 Poynton 0 Three goals in the first half , two in the opening ten minutes gave Poynton too much to do in the second half as Juno ran out worthy winners in an entertaining game at Sam Woodward and Darren Wilson got the home side off to a terrific start with a goal a piece as Poynton struggled to get into the game and Juno keeper Rich Lane was kept busy as the visitors pressed in the second half but they were vulnerable on the break and Steve Jenkins took full advantage setting up Darren Wilson for his hat-trick , then scoring the fifth himself. Old Alts 1 Mary Dendy 6 Anybody thinking Mary Dendy walked this game couldn’t be further from the truth..it was far closer than the scoreline suggests and was harsh on Alts who trailed to a solitary own goal at half time having created the better chances . With Dendy striker Will Tolley forced to leave the pitch with a nasty cut on his nose Ian Grassby deputised and it was his enthusiasm and captain Andy Currie’s workrate that eventually saw Dendy double their lead as Chris Hadfield tapped home from a yard mid way through the second half. Jamie Gibson confidently made it 3-0 minutes later dribbling into the penalty area and dummying the goalkeeper to score inside the near post. Alts gave Dendy a reality check as they them made it 3-1 with a spectacular effort that took a heavy deflection form the unfortunate Nick Brunker to fly past keeper Stuart Davies. Davies proved the difference as he thwarted Alts several times with crucial saves. Three goals in the final five minutes including two in stoppage time gave a rather distorted view of the game but substitutes Ian Grassby with two and debutant Simon Nicolson weren’t complaining as Dendy claimed only their fourth winof the season , three of which have come against the teams from Poynton Kings High Lane secured their third win of the season with a spirited display against Kings at Woodford Recreation ground . Having soaked up much of the early pressure, High Lane took the lead Dave Wilde setting up Jake Getchevsky to make it 1-0 but they had stand in goalkeeper Tony Graydon to thank as he saved a second half penalty. Quick thinking saw the visitors storm up field and earn themselves a corner and Marc Lilleyman headed home to make it 2-0 . Kings fought to get back in the game but Luke Murray’s goal was too little too late. Poynton Nomads 3 Old Alts Youth 1 A injury hit Nomads once again showed real team spirit as they overcame a strong challenge from Old Alts Youth at Bollington Rec. Stuart Johnstone and Tom Gaskell put the home side 2-0 up at the break but they struggled in the second half defending on a heavy pitch and despite the visitors pulling a goal back a second strike from Gaskell secured all three points as Nomads moved into second in the table. © Copyright by MaccWeb Scoops |
