The signs of Christmas across the Borough of Macclesfield are appearing this month with more trees then ever being delivered to local communities by the Borough Council and the first lights being switched on.
Some 18 trees are being installed ready for Christmas lights’ ceremonies. New trees have been provided outside the Heritage Centre, Macclesfield, and at Wood Gardens in Alderley Edge. Trees will also be installed at Bollington, Poynton (Fountains Place), Poynton (Queensway), Wilmslow Bank Square, Morley Green in Morley, War Memorial at Styal, Alderley Edge (Ryles Lane, Parade and Wood Gardens), Chelford Roundabout, Macclesfield Market Place, Henbury (Millennium Green), Prestbury (Bridge Green), Sutton (Robin Lane and War Memorial), Knutsford Council Offices, Disley Ram’s Head, and Pott Shrigley.
Wilmslow Grove Street will be the first lights switch-on at 4.30pm on Saturday 15 November, attended by the Mayor of the Borough of Macclesfield Councillor Thelma Jackson. Festive illuminations will also be switched on as follows:
Thursday 20 November – Alderley Edge (parade car park) 7.15pm.
Saturday 22 November – Market Place, Macclesfield, 4pm, following the East Cheshire Hospice Christmas Fair. There will be a switch-on of the Hospice’s Tree of Life, by the Mayor Councillor Thelma Jackson, and Macclesfield MP Sir Nick Winterton. The Fair will be opened at 10am by the Mayor of Macclesfield. A range of stalls such as jewellery, Christmas gifts, candles and fun stalls for the children including a toy tombola and lucky dip are all promised. The Hospice choir, Claritas, will be entertaining the crowds from 2-4pm. The Light up a Life ceremony and official Tree switch-on will be at 4pm.
Sunday 30 November – 4.30pm, Knutsford, Booths Supermarket Tree of Light and Crib.
Tuesday 2 December – 7pm, Poynton Festive Event, Park Lane.
Wednesday 3 December – 7pm, Canute Place, Knutsford.
Friday 5 December – 7.15pm, Disley, Ram’s Head, Market Street. The Christmas lights will be switched on in Disley on at 7.15pm by 2008 Paralympic gold medal winners Sarah & Barney Storey and Olympic track cycling gold winner Jamie Staff. Pupils from Disley Primary School and a Christmas choir led by Margaret Toft will be leading the carol-singing around the tree. Shops in Disley will be staying open until late and will be serving mulled wine and mince pies, hot soup, burgers and hot dogs. Father Christmas will be arriving at about 7.45pm.
