Macclesfield Welcomes Cheshire Youth Games & Sports Fair 2008

Hundreds of sporting youngsters descend on Macclesfield as the county’s youth games return to the Borough where the annual jamboree started 10 years ago. Up to 800 teenagers descend on the town on Saturday 11 October for the Cheshire Sports Fair and Games, organised by the Cheshire and Warrington Sports Partnership. Based at two venues, Macclesfield Leisure Centre and neighbouring Fallibroome High School, and features four competitive sports this year, in badminton, basketball, cheerleading and rugby. Councillor Andrew Knowles, Macclesfield Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community & Wellbeing, says: “It’s great to welcome the Sports Fair and Youth Games back to Macclesfield. There’s no doubting the value of sport and physical activity for a healthy lifestyle, and our visitors this weekend can try out our new Urban 51 centre, full of testing activities." The Sports Fair & Games also include a chance to try new sports. The programme will feature these taster activities: Archery, Urban Sports - boxing, agility, speed, fitness circuits, skipping - Futsal, Handball, Rowing, Dance, Paddlesport, Racketball, Wheelchair Basketball and Table Tennis. All the sessions will be led by qualified coaches in a fun and sociable environment. Gill O’Hare, MBC’s Sports Development Officer, says: "The Youth Games are so different this year and it’s the important feature of trying out a variety of sports which, I hope, will attract crowds to the Leisure Centre and Fallibroome." The sessions will cater for all levels of experience so, even if the participants are new to the sport, these sessions will be ideal. All the activities are free and all equipment is provided. The events start at 10am and continue until around 3.30pm. Participants receive free gifts, medals and certificates on the day as well as numerous prize give-aways. Among the activities are a mobile skate park, wheelchair basketball workshop (1-2, Leisure Centre), Mascot activity (1.15-2, Leisure Centre), Wii skipping challenge and fitness testing both in the main arena, and a climbing wall available at Fallibroome. Tasters take place as follows: Badminton, basketball, urban sports, rowing, paddlesport, racketball, table tennis, judo and wheel sports are all happening at the Leisure Centre, while Fallibroome host cheerleading, rugby union, archery, futsal, handball and soccercage. 106.9 Silk FM and Canalside Community Radio providing on-site entertainment
