The world famous Christie Hospital is asking local people to help decide its new name.
For the first time in its 107 history the Christie is planning to change the 'Hospital' part of its name to better reflect the full range of work that it undertakes.
As the organisation takes forward ambitious plans to provide more Christie cancer services in other parts of the region – and enhance its research and education - the word 'hospital’ no longer represents all the work undertaken by the Christie. Plans to develop the Christie as a world-class cancer centre over the next five years include expanding its early clinical trials unit to become the largest in the world, building new Christie radiotherapy centres in Oldham and Salford and developing a School of Oncology to educate the doctors, nurses and other professionals of the future.
A more accurate description will also help attract more funding from European organisations for research and education.
Caroline Shaw, Chief Executive, said: “We’d never lose the word Christie, but we’re not just a hospital anymore and would like our research, education and services to be reflected in our name. We wouldn’t exist without the great support of local people so we’re encouraging the public to give us their preference on a number of different options.”
The four new name options being considered are 'The Christie’, 'Christie Cancer Centre’, the 'Christie Comprehensive Cancer Centre’ or the 'Christie Cancer Institute’. An option of keeping the name as it is also being offered.
The public are invited to give their preference on the new Christie name from Thursday 19th June until Friday 15th August via the Christie website at www.christie.nhs.uk.
The new name will be announced at the end of September 2008.
