Changes to Stray Dog

Arrangements in the Borough

Arrangements for dealing with stray dogs in the Borough of Macclesfield changes from early April.

Macclesfield  Borough Council (MBC) took over responsibility from Cheshire Police for accepting strays found in the Borough from Sunday 6 April. The change has come about under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 and additional funding has been provided by the Home Office to cover the costs of an out-of-hours service.

Residents finding a stray dog and thinking of taking it to a local police station will now be asked to take the animal to a kennels at Eaton near Congleton instead.  The kennels will accept strays between 4 and 8pm weekdays, and 9-8pm at weekends and Bank Holidays. The address is: Fields Farm, Bebbington Road, Eaton, CW12 2NL.

Dogs held at Eaton will either be returned to their owners by the dog warden during office hours if claimed, or transferred to the Manchester Dogs Home on the following working day.

Paul Jennings, Environmental Enforcement Team Leader, says: “The number of dogs collected from the Police by the warden can be as many as three a week.”

The dog warden continues to provide a collection service during working hours for any stray dogs found and reported. Dogs will be returned to their owners, if identified, or transferred to the Manchester Dogs Homes for seven-day retention.
