Community Engagement

Mar 7, 2008

Dear All

As you will be aware we have been running a number of Community Action Meetings across the Neighbourhood Policing Unit area for the past few years and that I have been continually reviewing the process in line with attendance numbers and feedback from local residents.

Seven meetings were held during February and a brief summary of each meeting is outlined below including the priority that attendees in the relevant areas voted for :

Bollington                 20 attendees              Under Age Drinking

Poynton                     65 attendees              Anti Social Behaviour

Upton                        27 attendees               Drugs

Moss                         12 attendees               Anti Social Behaviour

Weston                      9 attendees                 Drugs

Hurdsfield                 1 attendee                   No Vote Taken

Town Centre              26 attendees              Youth Anti Social Behaviour

I am content that we are tackling each of the prioritised areas to the best of our ability through ongoing initiatives such as Arcangel and the drugs warrants that we are carrying out on a weekly basis. I am also content that a host of our partner agencies are undertaking similar initiatives in relation to the sale of alcohol to the under age, irresponsible off licenses and other associated nuisance.

My main area of concern relates to our joint ability to update large numbers of people locally as to what is being done on a daily basis to address local concerns. Regular updates such as this one, my monthly column in the Macclesfield Express, my officers discussing ongoing enforcement action with residents within their beat or ward area and so on still only touches a very small percentage of the local population.

With that in mind I am now in the process of developing specific engagement plans to cover each beat or ward that my officers cover. In doing so I am again reviewing the existing Community Action Meeting process as the whole process requires ongoing development. This is especially crucial in those areas above where the attendance of local residents invited to vote for the number one performance priority of their local officers was extremely low.

I would welcome any thoughts that you may have in relation to all of the above and I will update you all as the general engagement process develops.

Regards

Gareth
