Stay Cool when Driving in Snow and Ice
Snow and ice create unpredictable driving conditions. Snow can take you by surprise and fall thick and fast. Black ice is virtually invisible. Only drive in these conditions if absolutely necessary.
Driving Tips for These Conditions
- Use dipped headlights
- Generally slow down !
- Keep your distance; it can take up to ten times longer to stop when roads are icy
- Use the highest gear you can to avoid wheel spin that could cause you to lose control
- Approach corners at a steady speed in as low a gear as possible. Don't touch the clutch ! Steer smoothly and avoid braking on bends
- If you do start to skid don't panic. Take your foot off the accelerator and try to steer a straight course. Do not brake suddenly !
