Jodrell bank was established in 1945 as an observatory and has been dominating the Cheshire countryside ever since. Over the last 60 or so years it has played a crucial part in identifying exciting things such as distant stars, and now it seems it may become a star in its own right as it has been recognised as a contender for becoming a new World Heritage Site.
Changes in the rules of how World Heritage Sites are selected means that scientific centres now stand a chance to take the title and join the likes of the Giant's Causeway and the Tower of London to name but a few.
Jodrell bank is one of two scientific centres to be named as a contender. The competitor for the title is Cern, a laboratory for particle-physics on the Franco-Swiss border. Whilst there are a few scientific centres already coveted with the title of being a World Heritage Site - The Royal Observatory in Greenwich - for example, none of them have achieved the title purely because of their scientific achievements - Jodrell may well be the first to do this!
Jodrell Bank being recognised for this award just goes to show us all one thing: that if you reach for the stars, who knows what you could achieve!
