Volunteers from the RSPCA Macclesfield SE Cheshire & Buxton Branch were joined at Sainsbury's Macclesfield store last Saturday (28 July 2007) by a team of Badgers from St John Ambulance, Congleton Division to raise funds for local animal welfare. The smartly uniformed team of youngsters and adult supervisors joined RSPCA volunteers from across the local branch area for bag packing which raised £755.
John Turner, Badger Leader for the Division said, "From time to time our Badgers volunteer to offer their support to other charities and good causes. We were approached by the RSPCA because of the size of this Sainsburys and the fact that manning all checkouts, all day was going to be a challenge for them. Some of our Badgers thought that they should offer their help. All enjoyed the experience and were pleased to have raised money for rescue animals."
Volunteer Co-ordinator for the local RSPCA, Gillian Kaloyeropoulos, said "John's team were very welcome and as the photograph shows, they were very active in packing customers' shopping. We are working more and more with other animal charities to look after animals in our area, so it is nice to see similar levels of co-operation with human organisations such as St John Ambulance, Army Cadets and others where in the end animals benefit. We would like to thank the staff at Sainsburys for allowing the bag pack and their assistance, plus of course, the generosity of their customers."
The next RSPCA street collection is scheduled for Alderley Edge on Friday and Saturday 10 & 11 August. People willing to volunteer for the local RSPCA branch should go to their web site www.rspca-macclesfield.org.uk and complete the application form.
