Cheadle Lions made sure the Macc and District FA Sunday Cup remained in the hands of a club from the East Cheshire Sunday League for yet another season after defeating a strangely subdued Pack Horse side at the Moss Rose. It was a disappointing match overall with a distinct lack of real goal mouth action and a host of niggley fouls from both sides. Cheadle set their stall out early going ahead after two minutes through Paul Garvey and seemed happy to let Pack Horse take the game to them. They coped comfortably with everything the Pack could muster with the whole of their back four in uncompromising mood with Anthony Francis and Tom Bailey quite outstanding.

The Pack just couldn’t break them down despite having plenty of possession in midfield too often passes were misplaced and their creative players normally so dangerous out wide were quickly closed down or surrendered possession. Simon Band worked hard upfront and his individual battle with Andy Bailey was one of the highlights of a dull first half as the Lions led 1-0 at the break. Cheadle’s tactics worked well and they continued to stifle Pack Horse’s attacks as they strived for an equaliser. A change of tactic saw a frustrated Harry Wheetman and Simon Band replaced upfront by Matt Towns and Dave Hancox with Terry Costello coming in to bolster the midfield but it had little effect. The Lions sensed victory and two goals in the final five minutes from Rick Crawford and Andy Simpson capped a fine tactical performance. Not a spectacular game but a fine team performance in front of a rather sparse crowd at a sunny Moss Rose.
