Macc & District Sunday Football League Cup Final

6th May

A C Bollan     2    Spinners    3

First Division Spinners claimed a remarkable league and cup double after a dramatic finale to  the League Cup Final  at the Moss Rose.
Gaz Richards scored the equaliser for Spinners
There was no doubting that  the newly crowned  First Division champions were the better team on the night but the manner of their victory ,in the fourth minute of stoppage was cruel in the extreme. The game was tied at 2-2 when midfielder Dave Williams poked a speculative shot goal wards from the edge of the penalty area through a crowd of players. Whether goalkeeper James Flower was unsighted it wasn’t clear but the ball rolled agonisingly through his grasp and into the net. It was an uncharacteristic error from the AC Bollan stopper who’d had an excellent game thus far  but it ultimately cost them dear.

It had been a whirlwind start to the match with AC Bollan taking the lead after only two minutes, James Wheeler’s cross somehow finding it’s way past a  stunned Phil Ravenscroft but Spinners looked the more likely to score.Spinners  strike force of  Thomas Gill, Dan Hunter and  Gaz Richards kept centre backs Jack Pilley and Adam Reeson busy at the heart of the AC Bollan  defence but it wasn’t until  the half hour mark that they finally managed to break through. Having forced a series of corners,  Gaz Richards grabbed the equaliser with a poachers goal  from close range.

Spinners started the second half the brighter forcing Bollan to bring back striker  Andy Davies to aid their defence  leaving Tim Hammond the lone frontman. On the hour mark their plan seemed to have paid off as they took the lead against the run of play . Dave Jones rising above two defenders to head powerfully home.

Spinners were running out of ideas  but a double substitution changed the game almost immediately. Andy Foote and Nathan Hulley fresh from their Inter-League cup final triumph with ECL champions Boarhound the previous evening tormented the Bollan defence and it was a fantastic header by Foote that tied the game at 2-2.

With the darkness closing in and a persistent drizzle making the playing surface greasy  extra time looked a certainty…that was until the fourth minute of stoppage time .
