A review of this weekend’s action from the

Macclesfield & District FA Sunday Cup- First Round

Sponsored by Gradus Ltd

11th October 2009

This weekend saw the First Round proper of the Macc and District Sunday Cup with its usual thrills and spills .

Last seasons winners  Alderley Royal Oak now back to their original name Drum and Monkey  had a scare as they were taken to extra time against Higher Poynton. 2-0 down at half time thanks to goals from John Yates and Mark Toomey  Drum fought back in the second scoring twice to level at 2-2 . In extra time their superior fitness told  and they scored three times to ease into Round 2   5-3

Scott McGowan grabbed a hat-trick and was joined on the score sheet  by Duncan Warrinder with a penalty and Joe Ingham. Farmers Arms left it late as a solitary goal from Sam Skade with less than ten minutes remaining helped them knock out Chilli Banana 1-0.  Also through to Round Two are Prestbury Club as they defeated FC Wilmslow  4-2 . Wilmslow led twice in the first half but they hadn’t catered for the skill and guile of  Omar Lampety who brought  the visitors level by half time. The second half belonged to Prestbury as they closed out the tie with two more goals courtesy of Neil O’Brian and Craig Scott. At Mary Dendy Fields Paul Heathcote took charge as Pack Horse proved too strong for last seasons’ Premier Division runner’s up AC Bollan . Sean Gill was a powerhouse in midfield  for the Pack the goals coming  from  Simon Ainsworth, Harry Wheetman and Jono Campbell as the game finished  3-0. The biggest win of the day was at Biddulph where Queens Arms  thrashed Biddulph Roaring Meg 10-1. It was all too easy for the visitors who led 6-0 at half time and scored four more in the second half  although Clive Longbottom did grab a consolation for Roaring Meg. Seven different goal scorers showed what a great team effort it was for Queens with Stuart Ainsworth 3 , Tom Wild  2, Carl Henshaw, Scott Wright, Dave Brindle, Ryan Foster and Luke Murray all on target.  Also through to the Second Round draw go Valiant . A Ricky Mallen strike enough to see them through against Peover 1-0. Congleton Road witnessed a great cup tie between First Division Chester Road Tavern and Premier Division opposition Macc Boys Seniors. Leading 3-0 thanks to a brace from Eddie Roberts including a penalty and one from John Barnett the visitors looked to be cruising to victory but new boys Chester Road had other ideas. They competed for every ball and showed real commitment to claw the game back to 2-3 at half time with goals from Dave Spruce and Ryan Walker. A special mention to their keeper Graham Cooper who, in trying to keep the ball out and preventing Macc Boys  from going further ahead had a nasty collision with the post  but continued nevertheless. Dan Naden made it 4-2 early in the second half before Lee Capes’ speculative  free kick  tickled through the fingers of Macc Boys’ keeper and over the line to bring the hosts back into  the game. A second yellow card meant Chester Road went down to ten men and that signalled the end of their resistance as Macc Boys took full advantage scoring three more times, two in the last two minutes.. Eddie Roberts completed his hat-trick with further goals coming from Josh Roberts and Simon Patterson as Macc Boys Seniors eventually ran out 7-3 winners

Brewers were glad to see Jake McGarry back on form as his hat-trick helped them to a 4-2 victory away at Westlands. Jordan Hitchin added a fourth. A goal in each half including a second half  penalty from Andy Mashiter and the opening goal of the tie just weren’t enough on the day for a disappointed Westlands side.
