Interested in a career in Social Care ?

Apr 9, 2007

Department of Health (National)
(DH) Look to a career in Social Care this Spring

Most people at Easter look forward to two extra days off work, family get togethers, roast lamb and Easter eggs. However, for many people, Easter like Christmas and birthdays, could be a time of loneliness and despair if it were not for their social carer.

For many people in England, their social carer can be the closest thing they have to family and play a vital role in ensuring that people across the country can enjoy a good quality of life - 365 days a year.

England needs to recruit thousands of additional carers in 2007 alone, to ensure that people receive the care and help they need to enable them to retain an independent lifestyle.

However, misunderstanding still surrounds the role of social carers which can prevent people from looking for a career in social care. The current Department of Health campaign demonstrated the unique relationship between real life people and their carers to show the impact that social care has on someone's life.

The DH wants everyday people to find out more about a job in social care. You don't have to have a string of qualifications. What is needed is a real desire to make a difference.

Social care work today offers a huge amount of variety from working with families and parents, to supporting a disabled person to enable them to live an independent life. It also provides an opportunity for on the job training with new recruits benefiting from an NVQ qualification and offers flexible working patterns allowing people to choose hours that suit them.
