Two bright sparks from Macclesfield College impressed the judges in a recent competition for young trainee electricians and won Silver medals in their categories.
Oliver Wilson, who works for Connect Electrical in Warrington, achieved second place in the Level 2 Technical Skills Competition. His manager Mark Dunbabbin commented: ‘We are really pleased with Oliver’s achievements, especially as he also finished one hour before his nearest rival in the competition demonstrating speed as well as skill and expertise!’

Sam Hewitt, who is employed by Richard Bayley at G R Bayley in Macclesfield, received a Silver medal at Level 3. Sam commented: ‘I am thrilled with my medal and also with what I am learning at Macclesfield College - the day that I spend studying each week really pays off as I get to learn new skills which I can then use as I go out and do jobs.’
The Electrical Installation Skills Test was entered by trainees from Colleges across the North West, including fellow Macclesfield College students Tom Blake of Berrisford and Curbishly and Shaun Hughes, employed by Paul Marshall at Marshall Sparks. It was organised and judged by NAPIT – the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers and involved two days of wiring, fault finding, inspecting and testing.

As medal winners Oliver and Sam were invited to an awards ceremony at NAPIT’s head office and received £50 cheques, electrical instruments and 12 months student membership to the association.
Keith Rudd, Electrical Tutor at Macclesfield College commented: ‘All four of our students performed really well and demonstrated a very high level of skill. NAPIT sets the standards for electricians and so for two of our students to be recognised by them as amongst the best trainees in the Northwest is a great honour.’
