Macclesfield College Students Boost Diabetes Charity

Macclesfield College
Jun 2, 2009

Students from LZ6, Macclesfield Learning Zone’s Sixth Form College, recently presented a cheque to Diabetes UK after raising money through two charity events.

The group,  who are on one year Preparation for Work and Foundation Life Skills courses, put the skills they have learnt into practice as they planned, promoted and successfully carried out a bring and buy sale and a Denim for Diabetes day.

The group chose Diabetes UK after their fellow student Paul Longden, who lives with diabetes, told them all about the good work that the charity does and how this year marks their 75th anniversary of helping to improve the lives of diabetics.

Team effort played a very big part in organising the events, and the students were thrilled with the amount of money raised. Nadine Bennett commented: ‘I thought we’d only raise £100 so I was gobsmacked when our tutor Sam said we’d raised £250!’

The money was presented to James Arthur, Diabetes UK’s Head of National and Regional Fundraising, who commented:

‘We are very grateful for the hard work the students have put in to raise this money. Diabetes UK is the largest patient oriented charity in Europe, but is always in need of promotion and funds raised through events such as these.’

He went on to say: ‘£9 million will be spent on research this year into treatments such as vaccines and transplant surgery and the money raised today will aid this vital research.’

There is a strong fundraising tradition amongst Macclesfield College and LZ6 students, both for national and local charities – for information on previous events see www.macclesfield.ac.uk
