Macc & District FA Sunday Cup Semi Final
Poynton Workman 3 Vale 0
Poynton became the first side from the East Cheshire Sunday League through to the Macc and District FA Sunday Cup Final after a convincing display against a Vale side who worked hard particularly in the first half but didn’t create enough chances.
To be fair both sides attacked from the first whistle. Chris Ogden was seemingly at the heart of everything in the centre of midfield for Vale breaking up play and driving forward but it was Poynton who came the closest to scoring , Adam Biddle , in goal for Vale making one of a string of fine saves . Poynton had been forced to temporarily re-shuffle after striker Rick Tindall received a heavy blow to the head and was treated on the pitch by paramedics but after a spell on the sidelines he returned to the action with seemingly no ill effects.. On sixteen minutes Poynton took the lead when Steve Hindall fired home from the edge of the area but Vale came right back at them . Tom Jackson unlucky not to hit the target with Vale’s best chance of the half… At 1-0 Vale were always in the game but five minutes before half time Dave Williams let fly from all of 25 yards and his shot flew into the net with Biddle stranded to give Poynton a two goal cushion. The next goal was always going to be crucial and when Jon Cairns tapped home from four yards out after great approach play from Mark Faulkner ,to make it 3-0 after only three minutes of the second half ,it was game over . . Spurred on by Tom Jackson Vale fought to get themselves back in contention but Poynton’s back four were solid and goal keeper Marcus Pencheon was rarely troubled.
