Wilmslow leap frogged Club AZ in the game of the day at Upcast Lane as the two rivals for the title battled it out. The result, a 4-0 victory to Wimslow showed how much they have progressed as a team this season. The introduction of Tom Gill has been the pivotal point in their season – since making his debut in the Inter League Cup against Sandbach United he has scored in every game he’s played in, culminating in a hat-trick against Club AZ one of the tightest defences in the ECL .
Wilmslow thoroughly deserved their win and with strength in depth all over the park they must surely go on to win some silverware this season. Danny Seatree has come on in leaps and bounds in midfield as has Dave Kendrick at left back but today the plaudits go to striker Tom Gill for his magnificent treble. Wilmslow’s fourth goal was an own goal. Its not all doom and gloom for Club AZ as Dave Mottershead, their manager is a shrewd tactician and will no doubt have something up his sleeve for the visit of Poynton Nomads next week.
Pushing hard in third place are Boarhound who brushed aside Old Alts Youth thanks mainly to a strong second half display from Andy Foote who scored twice . Wayne Shufflebotham’s eighth goal of the season had given the hosts a first half lead and with Foote’s contribution and a goal from Matty Roberts, Andy Masey’s goal for the visitors was mere consolation.
Mary Dendy ‘s game against Poynton Nomads was not a game of two halves , but a game of the same half repeated. Will Tolley had given Dendy an early lead but a pacy Nomads attack over ran a creaking Dendy defence as they scored four times to go in 4-1 ahead at half time . Sadly the second half left the home side with a distinct feeling of déjà vue as once again they scored early on, only to go on to concede a further four times . Will Perry , Tom Gaskell and Stuart Johnstone all scored twice for Nomads with Liam Gray and Steven Rhodes both grabbing one a piece.
Poynton Kings are slowly but surely climbing up the table after a comfortable victory against Old Alts who capitulated after losing their best player in the first half when the score was 0-0. Kings took full advantage although were disappointed they didn’t score far more. Goals from Tom Hopkins , Scott Wright and a Dave Brindle penalty were enough to seal the points.
Juno had the edge against Poynton in an exciting encounter at Sandringham Road. Two first half goals from midfielder Steve Jenkins , gave the advantage at half time but , without question the talking point of the half was the stunning 20 yard volley on the run from Leo Faulkner that simply flew into the net past a helpless goalkeeper, a definite contender for goal of the season.
Juno extended their lead early in the second half through Dave Westwood but it took some fine goalkeeping from Juno’s Riich Lane to keep the scoreline in tact and confirm the points would be heading to Juno.
High Lane can take heart from their performance against Old Alts Vets even though they lost. It showed they really can compete at this level and scoring three goals against a defence as frugal as the Vets is a feate not many teams will repeat this season. Dave Wilde gave the home side the lead in the first half but the pressure was most definitely on as the Vets laid siege to the High Lane goal. Unlike their defeat to Mary Dendy in which they dominated the game but failed to score the Vets did convert at least some of their chances and had at least three efforts cleared off the line by George Mitchell. The forced introduction of Steve Wilson and Jason Rathmill changed the impetus of the game but the hosts fell further behind from a corner. A fine individual effort from the pacy Jake Getcheffsky brought the score back to 2-3 but on the hour mark the Vets scored again to seal the points. High Lane never gave up and still chasing at least a point Steve Wilson fired home from 25 yards with five minutes to go..unfortunately for the hosts it wasn’t quite enough.
