236 (Bollington) Squadron, Air Training Corps celebrated it's 21st anniversary in style at Hollin Hall Hotel on Friday 14th November 2008 at its annual Dining In night. Various members of the town council were invited, along with past and present members of the squadron. Also in attendance were members of 42 Squadron of the Royal Air Force from Kinloss and honoured guests from BAe systems Woodford and Wharton. Rev. Steve Thomas attended in his capacity as squadron padre. The evening concluded with presentations to cadets who have made significant achievements during the year. The Squadron formed in 1987 as a detached flight, meeting at that time in Bollington Town Hall. The squadron took the number 236 to signify the connection with the RAF squadron which was based at Woodford. That squadron has since relocated to RAF Kinloss and is now 42 Squadron but the links with 42 squadron and the Nimrod and BAe systems are still strong. Indeed a group of 24 cadets have just enjoyed a liaison visit to RAF Kinloss in October. The 236 Squadron meets at Water Street School, Bollington on Mondays and Thursdays at 7.15pm. They also have opportunities for flying and gliding at weekends at Woodvale and Ternhill. The program includes Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions, inter-squadron sports competitions and adventurous training. There are currently 24 cadets aged 13 to 16 and 5 adult members of staff. Cadets can gain qualifications in navigation, airmanship, aerodynamics, radios and jet engine propulsion amongst other things. An important part of the activities is drill practice and preparing to represent the ATC at Remembrance Day, Kerridge War Memorial service and Battle of Britain services. 236 Squadron is currently looking for new cadets. If you wish to join the Air Cadets or for more information phone 05602 783623 during the meeting times above.
